Purchasing Services, in keeping with our commitment to identify and deliver best-in-class supply chain services and cost savings, has partnered with Cardinal Health OptiFreight Logistics, a 3rd-party freight service provider.
Historically, many suppliers markup their freight charges over the actual cost to ship the product. The OptiFreight® program eliminates supplier markups and further reduces the actual freight costs by leveraging carrier-direct freight pricing, aggressively managing supplier program compliance, and optimizing shipping modes while preserving the high level of delivery service Vanderbilt requires. FedEx and most of the other carriers commonly used to deliver our shipments are participating in this program.
Suppliers participating in the OptiFreight® program are no longer paid the shipping charges traditionally appearing on their product invoices. Instead, Vanderbilt now selects and pays the freight carrier directly based on the discounted contract rates negotiated and administered through OptiFreight®. Freight charges are then allocated to the appropriate centers through a journal upload using the GL distribution data provided in the purchase order.
